Lessons from Childhood and the New England Patriots

These days, if you spend any time at all around parents with their young children, you cannot conduct a conversation without the parents stopping in mid-sentence time after time to chastise Junior; "Don't put that in your mouth, stay on the sidewalk, don't talk to strangers, tighten the strap on your bicycle helmet"...the list is endless. When I was growing up in the early seventies, I was sent out with one simple warning-"don't play in the street." My father's belief was a simple one; once he gets hit by a car or two, he will learn his lesson.

If you are old enough to remember these simpler times, maybe you also recall as a child sticking your fingers into electrical outlets. After you got jolted by electricity enough times, you knew not to try that again. Now, as an adult, in years anyway, I often wonder "What the hell is wrong with me?" After being run down by cars and shocked by outlets more than once already this season by betting the under on high totals on games played by the New England Patriots vs. Dallas and Washington, the total of 56 posted for the game vs. the Colts still looks tempting to me-it just seems too high. Any total over 52 in the NFL is rare indeed. A lower score works in favor of the Colts, as wide receiver Marvin Harrison's status is unknown and if he plays, he is banged up. Indy needs to keep Tom Brady and his offense off of the field by using up the clock on long time-consuming drives. But I just don't trust the Pats, lead by psycho-coach Belichick. He will run up the score if given the opportunity and disregard the wrath of other coaches incurred by this behavior.

Check back on Sunday to see if I am willing to take a chance and stick my finger into that electrical socket for the third time this season.
